Standing high above the Danube River, Aggstein Castle is one of Austria's most atmospheric ruined fortresses. Built during the 12th century, the castle became infamous because of legends surrounding the Kuenring family and tales of robber knights who supposedly attacked passing ships along the river. Today visitors can explore ruined towers, stone walls and viewpoints overlooking the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley. It combines castle exploration with hiking, river cycling and vineyard landscapes.
