The Battle of Ane was one of the most significant medieval conflicts in the northern Netherlands. It was fought between the Bishopric of Utrecht and the forces of the Lords of Coevorden. The heavily armoured knights of Utrecht entered the difficult marshy terrain of the eastern Netherlands, where local fighters used the landscape to defeat them — a reminder that medieval warfare was not always won by the strongest army. Today the battlefield area near Ane offers peaceful countryside walks and cycling routes through the Overijssel landscape.
