The heavily armoured knights of Utrecht entered the difficult marshy terrain of the eastern Netherlands, where local fighters used the landscape to defeat them — a reminder that medieval warfare was not always won by the strongest army. Today the battlefield area near Ane offers peaceful countryside walks and cycling routes through the Overijssel landscape.
