The battlefield near the modern town of Barletta in Apulia was where the Carthaginian commander Hannibal Barca achieved one of the greatest military victories ever recorded. His army surrounded and destroyed a much larger Roman force using a brilliant double-envelopment strategy. Today visitors can explore the archaeological area and surrounding countryside, where markers explain the battle. The flat Apulian landscape makes the site ideal for cycling and walking routes.
