Umbria, Italy

The shores of Lake Trasimene witnessed another devastating victory by Hannibal during the Second Punic War in 217 BC.

The shores of Lake Trasimene witnessed another devastating victory by Hannibal during the Second Punic War in 217 BC. Using the surrounding hills and morning mist to his advantage, Hannibal trapped the Roman army between the lake and mountains, creating one of the largest ambushes in military history. Visitors today can explore the peaceful landscape around the lake. Walking trails through the hills provide views across the same terrain where the armies clashed, and lakeside campsites and cycling routes make it excellent for outdoor travellers.
