The Battle of Sinj is one of Croatia's most famous military legends. In 1715, a small Croatian force defended the town of Sinj against a much larger Ottoman army. According to tradition, defenders credited their victory to the miraculous protection of the Virgin Mary, leading to the creation of the famous Alka of Sinj tournament. Visitors can explore Sinj Fortress, museums and surrounding countryside. The nearby mountains make the area excellent for hiking, cycling and outdoor adventures.
