The Battle of Waterloo is one of the most famous military events in European history. Fought on 18 June 1815, it marked the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and ended his attempt to regain power after returning from exile. Today, visitors can explore the battlefield landscape, climb the Lion's Mound monument, visit the memorial museum and walk through areas where the French, British, Dutch and Prussian armies fought. The open farmland remains surprisingly similar to the landscape soldiers would have seen more than 200 years ago. Waterloo deserves its place as Belgium's most important historic battlefield because its outcome changed the political map of Europe. It is also one of the easiest battlefields to explore on foot.
