Dunrobin Castle, near Golspie in Sutherland, is the fairytale seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland and one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses, with origins in the 1300s. Remodelled in the 1840s by Sir Charles Barry into a soaring French château of turrets and spires, it is the largest house in the northern Highlands, with 189 rooms and formal gardens inspired by Versailles. Now a popular visitor attraction, it is famed for its falconry displays and even has its own station on the Far North Line.
