Perched on a dramatic rocky outcrop in the hills of Emilia-Romagna, San Leo Fortress is one of Italy's most impressive medieval strongholds. The fortress controlled important routes through central Italy and later became famous as the prison of Count Cagliostro, an 18th-century adventurer and alleged magician. Today visitors climb through the historic village and fortress while enjoying incredible views over the surrounding Apennine landscape. Its location makes it ideal for walkers and cyclists exploring Italy's quieter inland regions.
