The region became wealthy because of its salt deposits, which were mined by prehistoric communities as early as the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The discoveries around Hallstatt were so important that archaeologists named an entire prehistoric period — the Hallstatt Culture — after the site. Visitors can explore ancient mining tunnels, archaeological exhibitions and viewpoints overlooking one of Austria's most spectacular landscapes.
