Hermitage Castle

Newcastleton, Scottish Borders, Scotland

Hermitage Castle is a stark, semi-ruined medieval fortress standing alone in the remote moorland of Liddesdale in the Scottish Borders. Dating largely from the 14th century, this grim border stronghold guarded one of the most fought-over and lawless frontier valleys between Scotland and England, earning it a reputation as 'the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain'. It is perhaps best known for its association with Mary, Queen of Scots, who in 1566 made a hurried ride across the moors to visit the wounded Earl of Bothwell here. Now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland, its brooding, largely intact outer walls make it one of the most atmospheric ruined castles in the country.
