Hochosterwitz Castle

Carinthia, Austria

Perched on a 172-metre limestone rock above the Carinthian countryside, Hochosterwitz Castle looks like something from a fantasy film. Its 14 defensive gates made it one of the most secure medieval fortresses in Europe.

Perched on a 172-metre limestone rock above the Carinthian countryside, Hochosterwitz Castle looks like something from a fantasy film. Its 14 defensive gates made it one of the most secure medieval fortresses in Europe. Dating back to the 9th century, the castle became the ancestral home of the Khevenhüller family, one of Austria's most influential noble houses. Its unusual approach, passing through a series of fortified gates, was designed to slow down invading armies. Visitors can walk the historic route to the castle, explore armour displays and enjoy panoramic views across southern Austria. It works perfectly as part of a cycling or hiking itinerary through Carinthia's lakes.
