Klis Fortress was at the centre of some of the most important battles between Croatian defenders, Venetian forces and the Ottoman Empire. Its position above the mountain pass made it the gateway to Dalmatia. During the 16th century, Croatian captain Petar Kružić led the defence of the fortress against Ottoman attacks for decades before it eventually fell in 1537. Today visitors can walk through the fortress walls and towers while looking across the same strategic landscape that armies fought to control. The surrounding mountains and coastal views make it one of Croatia's most spectacular historical sites.
