Dominating the town of Kufstein beside the River Inn, Kufstein Fortress is one of Tyrol's most recognisable landmarks. First mentioned in the 13th century, the fortress controlled an important Alpine route between Bavaria and Austria. Over the centuries it was fought over by rival powers seeking control of the region. The fortress is famous for its giant outdoor organ, one of the largest in the world, which can be heard across the valley. Visitors can explore underground tunnels, defensive walls and exhibitions.
