The Siege of Alkmaar was a turning point in the Dutch Revolt and one of the first major defeats suffered by Spanish forces. After months of fighting, Dutch defenders successfully resisted the Spanish army. The famous decision to open the surrounding dykes and flood the countryside helped force the attackers to withdraw. Visitors today can explore Alkmaar's historic centre, city walls and museums, while the surrounding countryside offers excellent cycling through polders, dunes and waterways.
