The Dark Hedges

Armoy, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

The Dark Hedges is one of the most iconic and photographed roads in Northern Ireland. Planted in the late 18th century by the Stuart family, the avenue of intertwining beech trees was originally created to impress visitors approaching Gracehill House. Over the centuries, the trees have formed a dramatic natural tunnel, making it a favourite destination for photographers, walkers and film enthusiasts alike. The avenue gained worldwide recognition after appearing as the Kingsroad in the acclaimed TV series *Game of Thrones*, where Arya Stark made her escape from King's Landing. Its haunting beauty has since made it one of the island of Ireland's most visited filming locations. In recent years, storms, disease and the natural ageing of the centuries-old beech trees have led to the loss of a number of trees, meaning the canopy is no longer as complete as it once was. Despite these changes, the Dark Hedges remain an unforgettable sight, with much of the famous avenue still intact and instantly recognisable. Conservation efforts continue to preserve this unique landmark so future generations can enjoy one of Ireland's most atmospheric and historic tree-lined roads.
