The village of Willendorf became internationally famous after the discovery of the Venus of Willendorf, one of the world's most important prehistoric artworks. The small limestone figurine was created around 30,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic period. Although the original artefact is preserved in Vienna, the discovery site remains an important location for understanding early human history in Europe. Visitors can explore the archaeological area beside the Danube and combine the visit with cycling and hiking routes through the Wachau region.
