Warwick Castle is a medieval castle on the banks of the River Avon in the county town of Warwick, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068 on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon burh. Rebuilt in stone over the following centuries, it grew from a wooden motte-and-bailey fortress into one of England's finest surviving medieval castles, with soaring towers, ramparts and a great hall. Today it is run as a visitor attraction, with costumed shows, birds-of-prey displays, a dungeon experience and landscaped grounds laid out in part by Capability Brown.
