About the area

Belper was transformed in the late 18th century when Jedediah Strutt and William Thornton established cotton mills here, making it a center of textile manufacturing. The town's distinctive architecture reflects its industrial past, with workers' cottages and mill buildings still prominent. The Derwent Valley Mills are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Derbyshire has been inhabited since prehistoric times and contains significant Roman settlements. During the Industrial Revolution, the county became a center of textile production and engineering innovation, particularly around the Derwent Valley mills.
