About the area
Broadford developed as a crofting settlement in the 18th century, becoming an important stopping point for travelers crossing Skye. The village grew with the construction of the modern road network and ferry connections to the mainland. The Highlands were the heartland of the Scottish clans and Jacobite uprisings until the 18th century. The region was transformed by the Highland Clearances in the 19th century, when many communities were displaced for sheep farming.
