About the area
The area was historically inhabited by fishermen and farmers who exploited the lagoon's resources. During the Venetian Republic era, the territory was part of the Venetian mainland dominion. The modern municipality was formed in 1998 through the merger of Cavallino and Treporti. Veneto was the core territory of the powerful Venetian Republic (697-1797), which dominated Mediterranean trade for centuries. After the fall of Venice to Napoleon, the region passed through Austrian and Italian rule before becoming part of modern Italy in 1866.
