About the area
Founded in the 5th century by refugees fleeing mainland invasions, Venice became a major maritime republic during the Middle Ages. The city reached its peak as a trading power between the 13th and 16th centuries, controlling much of Mediterranean commerce before declining under Ottoman expansion and Austrian rule. The Veneto region was dominated by the Venetian Republic for centuries, becoming one of Europe's most powerful city-states. After Venice's fall in 1797, the region passed through Austrian rule before being incorporated into modern Italy in 1866.
