About the area
Bardolino has been settled since Roman times and developed as an important port town during the medieval period. The town's economy has historically been built on wine production, with the Bardolino wine region becoming internationally recognized in the 20th century. Veneto was the heart of the Venetian Republic, one of history's most powerful maritime states, which dominated Mediterranean trade from the 13th to 18th centuries. The region later became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before joining unified Italy in 1866.
