About the area
Canna has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important centre of early Christianity in Scotland. The island was owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1981 after being gifted by explorer and folklorist John Lorne Campbell, who spent decades documenting the island's Gaelic culture and traditions. The Highlands have a complex history marked by the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries and the subsequent clearances that transformed the region. The construction of roads and railways in the 19th century opened the area to tourism and development, though much of the region remains sparsely populated today.
