About the area
Dunvegan Castle was first established in the 13th century and has been continuously inhabited by the MacLeod clan since then, making it one of Scotland's oldest inhabited castles. The castle played a significant role in Highland politics and clan warfare throughout the medieval and early modern periods. Skye has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was home to Pictish and Gaelic peoples before becoming a major stronghold of Norse Vikings in the medieval period. The island was ruled by various Scottish clans, particularly the MacLeods and MacDonalds, and remained a centre of Gaelic culture and language throughout its history.
