About the area
Portree was established in the 18th century as a planned town by the British Linen Company. The town was named after King James V, who visited the island in 1540, with 'Portree' derived from 'Port an Righ' meaning 'Port of the King'. It developed as a fishing port and later became the administrative center of Skye. The Highlands have a rich history of clan culture and were the center of Jacobite uprisings in the 17th and 18th centuries. The region was significantly transformed by the Highland Clearances in the 18th and 19th centuries, when many tenants were displaced to make way for sheep farming. Today it remains deeply connected to Scottish Highland heritage and traditions.
