Devised by Alfred Wainwright in 1972, the Coast to Coast Walk runs from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire coast, crossing three national parks — the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. It's not an official National Trail but is one of Britain's best-loved long-distance walks.

Terrain
Everything from rocky Lakeland fells and high passes to gentler Dales limestone country and heather moorland on the Moors. The Lake District section has the toughest climbs and most exposed high ground; waymarking is inconsistent in places since it isn't an official National Trail, so a map or GPX track is worth carrying.
Conseils
Because it's unofficial, signage varies a lot by county — download a GPS track rather than relying only on waymarks. Book Lake District accommodation early; it's the most in-demand section. Most walkers take 12–16 days west to east, which keeps the weather generally at your back.
