The Great Glen Way follows the geological fault line that splits the Scottish Highlands, tracing Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness via the Caledonian Canal towpath and forest tracks. It's one of the easier Scottish long-distance trails, making it a good introduction to multi-day walking in the Highlands.

Route map

Terrain

Mostly flat or gently graded towpath and forest track, with one higher-level optional section above Loch Ness offering better views at the cost of more climbing. Well-maintained and clearly waymarked with the thistle hexagon symbol used across Scotland's Great Trails.

Tips

The high route above Loch Ness (via Blackfall Wood) is worth the extra effort for the views if weather allows, but has a low-level alternative in poor conditions. Midges are a real nuisance June to August along the canal sections. Cyclists share much of the route, so keep an ear out on the towpath.
