Novigrad has a rich history dating back to Roman times when it was known as Emonia. During the Middle Ages, it became an important Venetian settlement, and the town's fortifications and architecture reflect centuries of Austro-Hungarian and Italian influence. The town was significantly rebuilt after World War II and has developed into a popular tourist destination. Istria has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important Roman province. The region was ruled by Venice for centuries, followed by Austria-Hungary until 1918. After World War II, most of Istria became part of Yugoslavia and is now primarily in Croatia, retaining its unique multilingual and multicultural character.
